  • Your dog must be up to date with heartworm prevention in order to be prescribed heartworm medication. Please see your veterinarian for a heartworm test if your pet is not currently on heartworm prevention or has missed more than 2 doses.

Heartgard Plus is a heartworm preventative that kills heartworm larvae and helps to control and treat hookworms for dogs up to 25 lbs (around 11kg). It comes in a tasty, beef-flavored chewable treat that should be given to your dog once a month.

    Uses
To prevent heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) for one month (30 days) after infection.

    Precautions
Do not start in puppies below six (6) weeks of age.
All pets above six (6) months of age who are not on a current heartworm prevention program must be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with this medication.
Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of ingestion by humans, clients should be advised to contact a physician immediately.

  • Active Ingredients
68 mcg Ivermectin and 57 mg Pyrantel

  • Recommended Dosage
Feed one (1) tablet once every month, preferably on the same date each month. Consult your veterinarian for proper dosing instructions. Do not split the tablet to share between 2 dogs; cutting the tablet into 2 does not mean that there is an equal amount of the active ingredients in each half.

    Possible Side Effects
When used as directed on the label, side effects are very rare (1.1%).

Side effects that are usually not serious include:
Vomiting/ Diarrhoea- while gastrointestinal side effects are usually mild and not concerning, please contact your veterinarian if this happens.

Side effects that may be serious (extremely rare):
Neurological problems including sudden blindness, excessive drooling/foaming, seizures, severe weakness, clumsiness, coma, or if your dog is pressing its head against the wall. Breeds with the MDR1 gene mutation are more prone to such symptoms. If you see any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.

    Drug & Food Interactions
Heartgard Plus has been tested to be safe in pregnant/breeding female dogs, and puppies aged six (6) weeks and older.
